Zach Johnson and Fred Couples were selected as two of Captain Davis Love III’s four assistants for the 2022 Presidents Cup in April. He has now filled the final two positions.
The matches set for September 20–25 in Charlotte, North Carolina, will include Steve Stricker, the 2021 Ryder Cup winning captain, and Quail Hollow Club member Webb Simpson as Love’s assistant captains.
In a press release, Stricker said, “I am excited to join Davis, Fred, Zach, and Webb at Quail Hollow this September. I look forward to helping the U.S. Team as much as I can in an effort to retain the Cup.” Many of the players on my Whistling Straits squad will be participating in Charlotte due to the current standings, and I know we’re all looking forward to seeing these budding stars continue to shine on a big stage.
Stricker led the United States to a 19-11 victory in the 2017 Presidents Cup at Liberty National.
According to Simpson, “I’m pleased to see the Presidents Cup contested on my home course in a wonderful sports town like Charlotte, and I know the fans will show up with terrific support for the U.S. Team.” “I’ve had the good privilege to play for Davis in previous international competitions, and he’ll have this team ready to compete every day,” I said. Being named a captain’s assistant is an honor, and I look forward to providing the boys with some course expertise and a kind, welcoming team environment.
Simpson has competed for the United States in three Presidents Cups and will be an assistant for the first time (2011, 2013 and 2019).
As of August 2, Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay, Sam Burns, Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas, and Tony Finau are the six automatic qualifiers for the American squad.
