Six more players from the top 50 in the world ranking joined a field that already included world No. 3 Dustin Johnson, No. 5 Bryson DeChambeau, and sixth-ranked Xander Schauffele.
According to tournament officials, Tony Finau, Patrick Reed, Matthew Wolff, Cameron Smith, Marc Leishman, and Lucas Herbert have all committed to compete in the Saudi International, making it the greatest field ever on the Asian Tour.
The PGA Tour took its time approving competing-event releases for its members to compete in the Saudi event, which will be held Feb. 3-6. The release was eventually approved based on stipulations that the players must add the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, which will be held the same week as the Asian Tour event, to their schedules in future seasons.
The Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia will serve as the event’s title sponsor, fueling speculation that the P.I.F. is planning to support a competing super league.
LIV Golf Investments, which is directed by Greg Norman and is the driving force behind the planned super league, is backed by the P.I.F. LIV Golf invested $200 million in the Asian Tour last year for a 10-year period.
