PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLORIDA (AP) ,The prize pool for this week’s Players Championship is obnoxiously enormous, to use a word from Phil Mickelson. The winner takes home $3.6 million, while solitary 39th place earns $91,000, a grand more than Jerry Pate did when he won the first Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass in 1982. And if you finish DFL, you’ll still get $43,000. It’s been a good week for getting through the cut and stinking up the joint over the weekend.
But, according to Viktor Hovland and Joel Dahmen, it’s not all about the money.
Hovland is a low-income individual. He’s a happy man if he gets a side of guacamole and extra beef at Chipotle. The 24-year-old Norwegian remarked about the difference between suddenly having a large bank account at the Genesis Invitational last month.
“I didn’t have to keep track of every dollar I spent on plane tickets and food.” “That was a huge deal,” Hovland added. “Instead of skipping guac, I could buy double beef and extra guac at Chipotle and not have to worry about it.” It’s just everyday stuff like that, as if you don’t have to think about it. If you believe something is beneficial to your game, your health, or whatever it is, you should do it regardless of the expense. That was all there was to it.”
What about this week’s mega-millions prize pool?
“It’s a substantial sum of money.” He said, “Definitely a lot of guac and double beef.” “However, no matter how I complete this week, it won’t impact my life, at least not right now.” It’s obviously wonderful to have in the bank for the future and stuff, but I live in Oklahoma and I’m still wearing the same joggers I had two years ago and should definitely upgrade. But, you know, I live a pretty laid-back lifestyle, so it’s more about the opportunity to lift the trophy and be a part of something amazing.”
If Hovland were to win the grand prize, what would he buy?
“I don’t know, maybe a beautiful party for the boys back home in Oklahoma, and then we can go out and have some fun when I go back to Norway,” he remarked. “That’s all there is to it.”
Dahmen, who has already won more money ($8,236,182) than he ever expected in his life, said he would love to win the Players, but it would not send him on a shopping frenzy.
Dahmen stated, “I’m not going to buy a plane and a mansion.” “I’m just going to get some more White Claws, which I can already afford.”
