Rory McIlroy is due to lose $3 million (approximately £2.4 million) of his earnings from the PGA Tour’s Player Impact Program (PIP) following his withdrawal from the RBC Heritage event in South Carolina.
McIlroy withdrew out of the tournament immediately after missing the cut at the Masters last week. The PGA Tour’s rules dictate that a player may opt out of just one scheduled tournament per season, with the world No 3 having previously missing the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January.
McIlroy received $12 million for coming second behind Tiger Woods in the PIP rankings last year – a prize fund intended to reward the PGA Tour’s best performers — and has already been awarded 75 per cent of those payments.
