POTOMAC, Maryland Rory McIlroy peered across Persimmon Tree Road on his way to TPC Potomac earlier this week and grabbed a peek of Congressional Country Club.
McIlroy’s significant breakthrough at Congressional during the 2011 U.S. Open has been dramatically modified, but he was immediately brought back to that amazing week.
“I was driving in here yesterday morning and saw Congressional on the left and thought to myself, ‘That looks like Congressional.’ Oh, that’s Congressional,'” McIlroy remarked, referring to his honorary membership in the club, which he received a few years ago and planned to visit on Wednesday. “It’s evident that this place gives forth wonderful vibrations.”
McIlroy is back in town for this week’s Wells Fargo Championship, which was moved from Charlotte, North Carolina, for a year to make place for the Presidents Cup this year. Being so near to Congressional, he said, serves as a timely reminder of how well he has performed in the past.
“To this day, I believe it was the best week of golf I’ve ever played.” “That week, the ball was on a string, and you wish you could bottle that every week you play,” he added. “That was the best I could do that week.”
