“I have given all of them the option to pause or end the relationship as I understand it might be necessary given the current circumstances,” Phil Mickelson said of his corporate sponsors in a lengthy statement about inflammatory comments he made about the PGA Tour and the proposed Saudi-backed golf league.
Soon after Mickelson’s statement, KPMG declared that it was severing its relationship with him.
“Phil Mickelson and KPMG US have mutually agreed to cease our sponsorship immediately.” In a statement, the firm added, “We wish him the best.”
Since 2008, KPMG has sponsored Phil Mickelson and has been prominently displayed on his headgear. KPMG is a global network of professional firms providing audit, tax, and advisory services.
KPMG’s full statement is as follows:
Phil Mickelson and KPMG United States have mutually agreed to cease our relationship immediately. We send him our best wishes.
