Oklahoma competed in its second consecutive event with a PGA Tour exemption on the line, and for the second year in a row, a Sooner took home the prize.
After fifth-year senior Chris Gotterup won the Puerto Rico Classic last month (and received an exemption into the Puerto Rico Open last week, where he finished T-7), it was senior Patrick Welch’s turn this time. Welch won the Southern Highlands Collegiate and earned an invitation to the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, which will be held at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas on Oct. 6-9, 2022.
Welch has won two solo titles, the first being the East Lake Cup in 2020. For the week, Welch recorded a field-leading 19 birdies, which is also a personal best for the Aliso Viejo, California native. In the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, he is rated No. 66.
Welch’s effort also contributed to Oklahoma’s team title. It’s the Sooners’ second win of the spring season and fourth overall.
In a press release, head coach Ryan Hybl commented, “It’s really been a tremendous work from all of our guys thus far.” “Obviously, Chris went down to Puerto Rico and won, and then Patrick Welch coming out here and winning is simply incredible.” I’m really happy of how he handled everything today as we got closer to the finish line.”
@vincentpwelch (-14) wins the individual title to earn a @PGATOUR start and No. 1 Oklahoma (-38) wins the Southern Highlands Collegiate to make it 3️⃣ wins in a row!
