Nanna Koerstz Madsen leads the LPGA Thailand with late birdies.

THAILAND’S CHONBURI — Nanna Koerstz Madsen birdied the last two holes of the LPGA Thailand on Saturday to grab a one-shot lead after three rounds.

After lightning and rain halted play for 90 minutes at the Siam Country Club Pattaya Old Course, the 55th-ranked Dane shot an error-free 6-under 66 for a 54-hole total of 21-under 195 in humid conditions.

This Women’s Open feels grander than ever as Muirfield prepares to make history.

“I didn’t make a lot of errors.” “I hit a lot of greens,” Madsen, who is 27 years old, remarked. “I’d like to make a couple more putts, but generally, I’m pleased with the round.”

China’s Lin Xiyu (66) and France’s Celine Boutier (67) are separated by one stroke.

Madsen is looking for her first LPGA triumph after two top-five results in 2021, including a tie for third at the ANA Inspiration and a tie for fifth at the Women’s British Open. Her best LPGA finish came at the 2019 Indy Women in Tech Championship, where she finished second.

“I don’t think I’ve ever been in the lead.” She explained, “I have to be patient and make a lot of birdies.” “Winning my first LPGA title would be incredible.” That’s why I’m here.”

Boutier, who is ranked 22nd in the world, has six birdies to one bogey on her way to her third LPGA victory after victories in the 2019 VIC Open in Australia and the 2021 Shoplite LPGA Classic in New Jersey.

“This week, my parents and sister are visiting. They don’t get many opportunities to see me perform,” Boutier, who is of Thai descent, added. “Having them support me and pray for me to have birdies is wonderful.” In the final, I’d like to hit the fairways more. This will enable me to be more aggressive on approach shots.”

Lin, who started with just one birdie, ripped off four straight birdies from holes 12-15 before adding one more on the 18th for her second consecutive 66.

“On the last day, a lot of players are likely to attack.” As for me, I need to hit some fairways and when I get an opportunity, I have to take it,” said Lin, who is also seeking her first triumph.

Mexico’s Gaby Lopez (64), Canada’s Brooke Henderson (66), and Japan’s Nasa Hataoka (70) are three shots back.
