Mackenzie Hughes, who is competing in the Valspar Championship this week, said the news of Tuesday’s horrific car tragedy, which killed nine people, including six members of the University of the Southwest golf teams and their coach, was “heartbreaking.” Two people were killed in the other vehicle involved in the head-on collision.
Dayton Price and Hayden Underhill, both from Ontario, Canada, were among the men’s golf team members who survived the collision and were rushed to hospitals in severe condition.
Hughes is a Canadian as well. Hughes wrote a message of condolence on Twitter after his first round on Thursday in Palm Harbor, Florida, approximately 1,400 miles away, and offered to support the victims and families of the disaster.
So heartbreaking to hear the news from Texas. There are a couple of fundraisers set up to help these two families. Iโll be donating $500 per birdie starting tomorrow to help. Donate if you can.@PGATOUR https://t.co/EnNsTmFaf9

Hobbs, New Mexico, a small town on the Texas border, is home to the private Christian University of the Southwest. After competing in a competition in Midland, Texas, the teams were involved in an accident in Texas.
Hughes carded a 71 on Thursday. He made four birdies in his round.
