The Ice Man is Europe’s new man.
Henrik Stenson was named European Ryder Cup captain on Tuesday for next year’s events at Rome’s Marco Simone Golf and Country Club. The 45-year-old Swede, who follows Padraig Harrington as US captain, will lead with Zach Johnson, who was named captain earlier this month.
Stenson’s major goals are to defend his home soil and exact vengeance. Europe has won six consecutive Ryder Cups at home, with the previous defeat being in 1993 at The Belfry. The US is coming off a 19-9 victory in Whistling Straits last year, which set a new record.
Stenson has 11 points in five Ryder Cup appearances as a player and has been a part of three winning teams, the most recent of which was in Paris in 2018. Last year, he was a vice captain.
