Isn’t there nothing like a good Twitter feud between PGA Tour players to liven up a Friday night?
Many on social media chastised Kevin Na for his poor play, particularly on the greens, one day after he scored a thrilling 9-under 61 to take the first-round lead at the Sony Open in Hawaii. But it became personal when Grayson Murray, a fellow Tour pro, entered the argument.
The defending champion, Na, has a lengthy history of slow play, and he became the poster boy for it this weekend when he led the 2012 Players Championship despite his waggles and inability to draw the trigger at times. Murray has worked hard to improve his pace of play – and there are even slower snails on the Tour these days – but when he reacted to an innocuous tweet by golf TV reporter Chantel McCabe, his pace drew attention once more. “Kevin Na walking in putts never gets old,” she tweeted.
“Kevin Na spending 3 minutes to putt them does get old,” Murray, 28, who went away from the Tour last year to deal with personal issues including drinking, responded.
Shots have been fired. Murray did go there. Na could have taken the high road and just let it go, but we’re glad he didn’t. Na answered, “[You] missing the cut is getting old.” Zing!
Na was also correct. Murray has missed the cut in 13 of his last 17 events and withdrew in two of his last three outings, with his lone victory coming at the 2017 Barbasol Championship. Since March, he hasn’t made a cut.
“If they penalized you like they should for slow play, you’d never make another cut either,” Murray continued.
This Twitter feud erupted rapidly, and we’ll have to wait and see if there’s more to come or if this squabble is resolved.
