Carlos Ortiz discusses the importance of golf in Latin America.
MEXICO’S PLAYA DEL CARMEN – Carlos Ortiz came within one shot of winning the World Wide Technology Championship at Mayakoba two seasons ago, but he was able to apply what he learned and win on the PGA TOUR last November.
He’s in good shape after 36 holes at El Camaleรณn Mayakoba Golf Course, and he’s in a good position to win on the PGA Tour once more – this time in his home country.
“Just the feeling that Mexican culture has that as soon as you come into the hotel or the airport, or the golf course, you just get this vibe from everyone that makes me have a nice week, I guess,” Ortiz said after a 6-under 65 on Friday, following a 67 on Thursday.
“I get a lot of energy from that, and I love being here.”
Ortiz, who won the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Houston Open last season for his first TOUR victory (after winning three times on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2014), was tied for the lead at noon on Friday.

Recaps of Rounds
Carlos Ortiz wins his first TOUR championship.
He claimed that after coming up just short in 2019 (Brendon Todd beat Ortiz, Adam Long, and Vaughn Taylor by one point), he learnt the value of patience and was able to joke about the situation.
When asked what he learnt that week, he replied with a smile, “Just make more birdie.” “No, you just have to be patient and play as well as you can.” This week, I believe I’ve performed admirably. I’ve put together two good rounds, and all I have to do now is keep doing that for the rest of the weekend.โ
Ortiz last competed on the PGA TOUR in the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP, when he was forced to withdraw due to a shoulder injury. He stated he’s been doing “OK,” despite the fact that the ache hasn’t gone away. However, he added that the golf course was ideal for him to “bunt it around” while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
While there are no fans on the premises, there are a few individuals milling about, including a large number of volunteers. Ortiz said the Mexican mood that’s kept him going for 36 holes isn’t anything he can put into words, but rather something he feels.
“It truly helps me get through the week,” Ortiz added.
Perhaps it will help him reclaim his place in the winner’s circle. He’s more prepared than ever to try for another TOUR trophy now that he’s had the experience of lifting one.
“I know I can do it,” Ortiz said. “At the end of the day, I just want to be in contention for the last nine holes of the tournament, and that’s pretty much my aim.” “All I have to do now is keep playing good golf and having fun.”
