Brooks Koepka leans into ‘cupcake’ nickname at WM Phoenix Open with new merch drop

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA (AP) – Brooks Koepka is embracing the moniker “cupcake.”

In fact, he launched a cupcake rope hat that fiancée Jena Sims has been wearing in his gallery this week at the WM Phoenix Open (great touch with the blue frosting, but where are the sprinkles?).

This Women’s Open feels grander than ever as Muirfield prepares to make history.

It’s a throwback to the 2015 tournament here, when the first tee announcer referred to him as “Bruce Cupcake” on Sunday. Koepka went on to win his first PGA Tour tournament with a 66.

“When I walked off the tee, we were laughing about it,” Koepka recalled at his winner’s news conference in 2015. “I was giggling while practicing my swings.” I’m not sure what I’m talking about. The majority of folks have no idea how to phrase it. I’m not surprised in the least. He isn’t the first to do so. He isn’t going to be the last.”

Now that he’s won four majors and held the World No. 1 spot for a time, the golf world knows his name, but Koepka was proven true in his prediction. Just two weeks ago, first tee announcer Tony Perez, the father of Tour pro Pat Perez, named Koepka as Bruce at the Farmers Insurance Open.

On Saturday, Koepka said he would hand out Cupcake hats to spectators at TPC Scottsdale’s 16th hole, as he did during the second round.

“All my merch from my foundation and all that stuff,” he said, referring to hats and jerseys. “Man, this is the first time I’ve ever done it.”

The lightweight-cotton, twill-fabric hat with five-panel’retro fit’ and plastic snap fastening is available on Koepka’s website for $40 for those who don’t get a freebie at 16 or aren’t in attendance. All proceeds go to his charitable foundation, which is dedicated to improving the lives of children who are facing obstacles.
